Russian Railways offer to activate the East – West direction

11 2011

President of JSC "RZD" Vladimir Yakunin spoke to the members of the European Business Association and suggested to conclude an intergovernmental agreement on the corridor "East - West".

As explained by Vladimir Yakunin, for Russia, given its geographical location creation of transport corridors is a priority. Now an intergovernmental agreement is signed in respect of the corridor "North - South". There is a need to sign a similar agreement with the EU in the direction from west to east. Now the container sea route from Asia to Europe can be delivered in about 40 days, but if there is the flow of cargo, and the business of RZD will be properly built up, then the container reaches Hamburg in 14 days, - said Vladimir Yakunin. - Those who knows how to count money, know the price of frozen capital during transportation ".

To create a full transport corridor needed to upgrade the railway infrastructure and the most perspective project in this area is the extension of wider Russian gauge to Vienna.

Also, according to the President of JSC "RZD" it is necessary to create a major international transit logistic operator in the east - west direction involving partners’ capital who is interested in developing a competitive ground rail.

"We are struggling with the consequences of crisis rather than its causes, and, in my opinion, now an environment was created that requires new re-industrialization of Western countries, therefore, priorities are investment in the country's economy and its transportation system, - said Vladimir Yakunin. - We look forward to increasing the participation of the European business community in the formation of cargo flow between East and West. This will reduce the cost of rail compared to shipping. "

A representative of the Belgian company, which invests with the "Sibur" in the production of fertilizers in Russia wanted to know how RZD is going to develop railway infrastructure under the increasing volume of traffic in chemical industry for example. Vladimir Yakunin, as an example cited a recently signed agreement with "Novotekom" through which business is investing 30 billion rubles to expand the direction to Surgut. At the same time intelligible and clear tariff scheme will be developed by which the company will pay back their investments within a reasonable time.
