Project "Viking" 10 years!
Today, February 6, 2013 ten years have passed since the departure of the first combined transport train "Viking".
The main objective of the project – greater use of the IX corridor potential linking the Black Sea and the Scandinavian Peninsula.
In the project "Viking" take part Belarus, Ukraine and Lithuania. In order to increase cargo traffic at the end of 2012 to the project has joined LTD "Bulgarian Railways – Cargo traffic" (Bulgaria). The train is bound en-route Illichevsk / Odessa (Ukraine) - Berezhest (Ukraine) - Slovechno (Belarus) - Minsk - Gudogay (Belarus) - Kiana (Lithuania) - Klaipeda (Lithuania), its total length is 1766 km.
According to the results of 10 years we can talk about the formation of the brand of the train "Viking". The project, thanks to its efficiency, has become well recognized. The train has been moved into the category of regular trains, a significant increase in the volume of cargo traffic has been noted: from 175 containers in 2003 to 58.9 thousand in twenty-foot equivalent containers (TEU) in 2012.
In 2009, the Intermodal Association has named the container train "Viking" the best European project of cargo traffic from point A to point B. As a part of the marketing strategy of the project was claimed the trademark «VIKING TRAIN», were designed a web-site and a promotional video.
The effectiveness of the project is achieved through good management of supply chain and coordinated relationship between the railways of Belarus, Lithuania and Ukraine. The train can transport large-capacity containers, specialized platforms with lorries, passenger wagons for drivers and freight forwarders.
The only operator of the container train "Viking" in the Republic of Belarus is a state enterprise "BTLC" of the Belarusian Railway.
During the existence of the project worked out the delivery routes of export-import cargo of large enterprises in Belarus, "Minsk Tractor Plant" (station Stepyanka), JSC "Grodno Azot" (station Auls), JSC "Naftan", factory "Polymir" (station Novopolotsk), RUE "Minsk Automobile Plant "(station Shabani).
As a part of the project the expansion of the geography of transportation to basins of the Baltic and Black Seas is planned.
